Your writing style is truly super interesting, it's like savoring a delicious tea sip by sip. Every word and every sentence is carefully written, the story is stunning. I love this. The cover art is also very pretty! Stunning Work! <3

What stayed with me most was the choice at the heart of the story: even when survival seems impossible, Grace and Dmitry still stop for a child they don’t know. That decision is what truly makes them human. Dmitry’s sacrifice, Grace singing the lullaby on the rooftop, and the final reunion all carried so much emotional weight. The title fits perfectly✨

MortalBird's avatar

Thank you so much. ❤️ Those choices were always the heart of the story, so I'm really glad they resonated with you.

I really liked that the story never treats "remaining human" as simply surviving. Dmitry's choice to go back for Grace, and Grace refusing to abandon the child, both feel like acts of resistance against the invasion in their own way. The ending would've been exciting regardless, but those choices are what stuck with me afterward. I'm curious, which scene came to you first: Dmitry coming back in the shuttle, or Grace singing the lullaby on the rooftop?

MortalBird's avatar

Thank you. ❤️ Grace's scene on the rooftop was always the heart of this story for me.

That makes a lot of sense. It definitely felt like the emotional center of the story. I think the lullaby is what transforms the ending from a survival scene into something much more human. I actually paused there for a moment before reading on. Was Dmitry always meant to come back, or did you ever consider ending the story on the rooftop?

I often write stories with tragic endings, but this was one I always wanted to end with hope. I wanted Grace to face the monster and show that she was defeated, but not broken—just like humanity itself. Even in the darkest nightmare, there's always a chance to be saved.

Amazing!

Your words are so well chosen. They created the full picture but allowed us, the reader to fill in many of the blanks which made it feel very personal.

MortalBird's avatar

Thank you so much! That truly means a lot to me. I'm really happy the story left space for your own imagination—that's exactly what I hoped for. Thank you for reading. ❤️
